Piano Lessons

One-on-one piano lessons are available for students as young as four years old. Never had any lessons before? Great! Want to return to piano lessons after an extended break? We can do that, too! Each lesson is tailored to students’ interests, goals, and skill level. We will learn how to safely play the piano while developing our ear, technical skills, and musicality. Students will learn to dig deeper into their music to understand the intentions of the composers, the character of the piece, and how stylistic choices have changed as time has progressed. We will explore individual musical tastes and interests in addition to traditional musical styles as we develop into skilled and independent musicians.

Voice Lessons

Want to learn how to sing? Navigate your voice? Sing that one song that seems impossible? Try voice lessons. During lessons, we will work on supported breathing and breath control, learning to navigate the voice comfortably and without tension, how to project our sound safely, how to use vowels and consonants, learn a variety of music from different genres, and actively prepare for upcoming performance opportunities. Students will work on learning how to understand and interpret their music to form emotional connections. Students will also learn how vocal techniques are modified depending on the different genres.  As we near performances, students will also work with an accompanist and become accustomed to collaborating with other musicians.

Music Theory

We know that music must have rules, but what are they?  Music theory will teach you the foundations behind the music that we hear every day. Girvan Music Studio offers lessons for beginner, intermediate, and advanced students. Preparing for exams? We can work on that. Just want to learn how music works? We can do that, too. In addition to taking piano and/or voice lessons, we will also be learning how music works through written music theory assignments, playing games, and while learning assigned music. Music theory isn’t just written homework, but it is involved in every single piece of music we hear or see. Music theory will deepen students’ understanding of their repertoire and help form connections between what they hear and what they see on the page.
